Electrical stimulation applies controlled electrical current to tissue for a therapeutic goal. A physical therapist may incorporate it into a broader plan depending on your needs and stage of recovery.
How it may be used
Different forms of electrical stimulation have different purposes and are selected by the physical therapist.
- TENS for pain management
- NMES or EMS to support muscle activation and strengthening
- Stimulation used to support circulation to a treatment area
Part of a complete program
Therapeutic modalities are not a one-size-fits-all solution. They may be combined with movement, hands-on care, and education to support the goals of your physical therapy plan.
